We are traveling Granada-Rome with change of planes in Madrid. I assume/hope that checked baggage will be transferred automatically but the Iberia website doesn't have that information. Does anyone have experience with this?

If it is the same airline (or even the same airline alliance) it will transfer. Just to make sure, when you check in wherever you start your trip, be sure that the bag tags they affix have all your flights listed on them (ask the agent to "Check the bags thorough"). That way your bags should get transfered automatically.
