We are planning a fall trip from Chicago to Rome, travel north to Zurich by train, then back to Chicago from Zurich. Iberia's fares are the most reasonable, but we've had no experience with this airline. Any advice here?

I've flown Iberia several times on the Chicago-Madrid route and have had no problems.....not one of the greatest airlines, but certainly not one of the worst. Cabin crew have been generally friendly and accommodating. Just remember that, if you're flying in from, say, Fort Wayne to Chicago via AA, you may not get seats assigned on the Iberia flight until you arrive at the gate in Chicago.
