Hydrofoil between Sorrento and Naples

We will be in Sorrento in late September and want to visit Naples one day to see Herculaneum and the Archaelogical Museum. Other than bus/train, we see a schedule for Hydrofoil transport. Has anyone tried it? Recommendations?

Joan,

I suspect the Circumvesuviana train would be a better option if you plan on visiting both Herculaneum and the Archeological Museum in Naples on the same day.

The Circumvesuviana can be quite crowded at times (be sure to wear your Money Belt and be prepared to stand!).

Happy travels!

We took the hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento a few years ago. It was great, pretty smooth ride, but chilly. We stayed inside the entire time. I would recommend.

If memory serves me right, it was only about 1.5 - 2 hours, and it was cool to watch the shore line. IMO it would be safer than the train between the two cities.

We arrived from Palermo on the overnight ferry and were heading to Sorrento for 3 nights. The ferry was very convenient. Not sure how it will be if you have to get into town, but I'm sure there will be taxis at the dock in Naples with all the ferry traffic.

The hydrofoils are useless if you want to go to Herculaneum. You'd just have to get to the train station to get back onto the Circumvesuviana and double back. Also, it will be easier to get to the Archaelogical Museum from the train station than from the docks. The train is clean and convenient. Rick makes a big deal about pickpocketing on the train but when we used it, it was quiet.
