I'm going to be traveling through Europe in a couple of months and will be going to Budapest via Vienna by train. I'm thoroughly excited but was recently told by my brother that you have to watch yourself on the Hungarian rail lines because many criminals use the trains to pick-pocket and what-not. I have utterly no idea if this is true, and have never heard this before, but since my brother told me, I thought I should check into it. Anyone know of any truth to these allegations? Especially on night trips?
How did your brother come by this information? Always consider the source.
Hi Ian:
Have done several trips to Budapest and do not think it less safe thab any other big city. Keep your money belt on as you should on any train.
The State Department fact sheet on Hungary doesn’t specifically note any increased risk of criminal activity on trains. Some countries have a big problem with this…doesn’t seem like this is the case in Hungary.
Well thank you everyone! You've laid my mind to rest on this subject. I will as always attempt to carry myself (and luggage) in a secure manner.
Hungarian trains were no different than any other trains. Don't let your luggage out of your site though.
