My husband and I are each taking a Rick Steves back door bag and daypack. What is the best way to secure our luggage on trains so it is not stolen? We will be taking two overnight trains and many day trains. Thanks!
On day trains, do as Rick does, take a luggage clip and loop it through the rack to secure it. You'll be a less easy target so get ignored.
When you say "luggage clip" do you mean the heavy cloth straps that have plastic buckles and come with some luggage sets?
During my InterRail days I always used a bike lock to secure my luggage. You can get them at any sports department of any department store in Europe from around €10...
Rick's back door bag fits nicely in the rack over the seats; we do have one of Rick's cable locks if for some reason we're both gone at the same time, the cable could be looped around the rack although we've never done this.
For night trains I would secure the bag to something even though the doors do lock; I would sleep better!
We used a cable lock. I was frustrated that I couldn't find one locally (even though I live in a reasonably large city and have an REI store quite close), so I ended up ordering it online from Magellan's. One lock should work for for than one bag.
Kathy, don't know what you were looking for but our REI stores carries half different cable locks as does the local WalMart.
