how to navigate in Pisa Centrale

I am heading to Italy , I have booked my train tickets , I will be going from Venice on a final stop in Monterosso, so I will start at Venice train station and go to Florence, and from Florence to Pisa, from Pisa to Monterosso. But, I have only 12 minutes to transfer trains into an Intercity train from Pisa to Monterosso. I have no idea where to go and find out where my platform is and is 12 minutes enough, when I have no idea where to go , never been. I do not want to miss my train , does anyone have tips for me so I do not miss my train. If I miss my train do I have a grace period to catch another train ? What does one do if they miss a train ?

Thank you for any help ?

Pisa Centrale is more or less a standard train station, if a large one. There are 6 island platforms, each with a track on either side plus one track station side. That is 13 tracks. There is an underground passageway connecting them all with stairways. There are electronic signboards indicating which track has which train. So making the actual transfer should only take a few minutes. If you can download the Trenitalia app, I believe it will show real time track information.

If you miss a train because it is late, you are allowed to take the next available train to your destination.

I am unable in Canada to download the Trenitalia app. So when we arrive from Florence to Pisa , is the first step to follow all the people to inside station and then check the electronic boards for our platform, then we go downstairs or are the platforms on the same level.

Thank you

If you Goggle Pisa Train station images, you will get a good idea of what it looks like. I have been to that one, too. There’s an electronic board at each line that shows the train number and end location for the next train. Otherwise if you don’t see your exact train number on the line beside you with the shared platform, go below down the stairs (yes, follow everyone), and find the reader board. Usually there’s a reader board either in the underground hall walkway or before the stairs to go up into the station.

It helps to stand up about five minutes before the train arrives at your station to be the first or second person off the train.

Try downloading the Trenitalia app when you arrive in Italy. Not sure why yours won’t work. I downloaded mine in the US.

All of the people will not be going inside the station. Many will be going to other platforms to transfer to other trains. Going into the station may unduly delay you. It would be better to know what Track you are arriving on, and what Track you are transferring to. Then you go directly there. For all you know, your train may be departing from the exact same Track you arrived on. BTW, Track is Binario in Italian.

Thanks so much, so I guess it sounds like get off the train quickly and then check the electronic board and go to your platform. By the way it has been a known fact that in Canada you can not download the Trenitalia app, but in US you are able to. Thank you all for your help, I was worried because i only have 12 min and we are traveling in a group and they are all relying on me and I had no idea how to navigate this train station. Thank you.

The first step is to get of the train. And then take a few moments to orient yourself. Don't start walking immediately.

Look at where the people are headed. That will give you an idea of where the exits are.
And look for screens on the platform. Normally there are displays that show where the next couple of departures are going to be from. It is good to be aware what the planned departure time is, as the displays are sorted by departure time.

Then you head for the underpass, and directly to your the platform for the next train.

12 minutes is a lot of time to change trains. Long enough to get annoyed at the inefficiency of the Italian railways :-)
