How to move from Split to Venice?

Hi, we plan to spend 4 days in Dubrovnik, 3 days in Split, then move on to Venice. Is there a better/cheaper option for crossing the Adriatic than taking the overnight BlueLine from Split to Ancona, then transferring to a train to Venice? Is it cheaper to book a ferry ticket via the internet in advance, or wait till we get to Split and go to the tourism office? Also, any other advice anyone can offer regarding this plan? Thanks in advance.
