Our hotel is in Venice, so I imagine well need to bug out around 4 am for a 7 am flight. So where in heaven's name do I get transportation from, say the main Venice train station to the airport at this hour???

The first ATVO bus leaves the Piazzale Roma square at 05:00. See here.

It depends on where your hotel is located. Once we left later in the day on a private taxi boat over to the airport right from the canal by our hotel and it was a lovely trip and not that expensive for two couples. Our hotel made the arrangements for us. The last time we took one to the train station from the canal close to our hotel. Your hotel should be able to book that for you or tell you the best way to get there.

Thanks for the pointers!
It seems I have a couple of options. Our hotel is closer to the bus stop (Piazzale Roma square) so I just need to check if leaving at 5 am gives us enough time. Otherwise, we can try the (much more expensive) boat.
