How to handle a potential airline-created missed connection in Frankfurt Int'l Airport?

Wife and I are soon off on trip-of-lifetime. This journey is Baltimore, Amsterdam, Holland America cruise, Copenhagen and back to BWI. I'm concerned about missing the first connection in Frankfurt, a code share of Condor to Lufthansa with a one hour connection.

We bought a one way ticket via Condor Internet website from Condor/Thomas Cook and this a codeshare using Condor to Frankfurt and then Lufthansa to Amsterdam. We didn't book via a travel agent, booked directly via the airline.

On a Monday evening in June we are taking
CONDOR FLUGDIENST GMBH
from BWI to Frankfurt, scheduled to leave BWI at 5:15 pm and arrive Frankfurt 720 am.
We are then scheduled, during the one hour lay over to get to Lufthansa at the Frankfurt Int'l
airport and board the one hour Lufthansa flight to Amsterdam, 820 am to 930 am.

I'm really concerned because Condor seems to leave BWI late most of the time and then try
to make up lost time in flight.

Since this is a code share, what is each airline's responsibility to get us to Amsterdam quickly if
Condor causes us to miss the connection? (We didn't choose the one hour connection, it was automatically
ticketed that way during the on line ticketing process.)

get us to Amsterdam

Lufthansa, since Condor is a subsidiary of Lufthansa. I'm pretty sure both airlines use Terminal 1, although they could use different concourses (there are three at FRA, A, B, and C).

I think they will make sure you make the connection. If your ticket is for a single booking, they should check you bags (if you check any) directly through to AMS, so the bags will be put in the hold of the Lufthansa plane automatically, and they are not supposed to take off with your luggage on board unless you, too, are on the plane.

Whether or not the flight is on time arriving, make sure the FA knows about your connection.

Amazing they schedule something like that. For a domestic flt that would be tight, but with passport control to do, it seems foolish.

I would contact Condor to see what/how they respond to your concern about the missed connection.

I cannot imagine they are scheduling a connection like this on a regular basis that leaves passengers stranded.

Speaking as someone who worked for an airline in Ohare Chicago international airline flights, they will make arrangements (before you even arrive) to put you on another flight. There may even be someone on the jet bridge when you get off to help you, there is a flight at 9:15

Hopefully, you are arriving the day before your cruise and not the embarkation day? If so, there are tons of flights between these cities and you should be fine if you miss your connection. If not, I'd be more worried about the initial Condor flight being canceled for some reason and not getting to Europe in time for the cruise.

Thank you all, for the responses. I'm a bit relieved by the knowledgeable responses.
Yes, this originating flight takes off on the 19th and the cruise leaves on the 22nd.
Yes, I will let the FA know about the connection.
Yes, it appears that Lufthansa is responsible since theirs is the connecting flight.

I would like to do carry on only but the entire journey is 18 days and Wife is convinced she needs
to pack enough clothes, (two formal nights on the cruise, museum/touristy clothes, sleepwear, exercise clothes and clothing for walks and hikes). I could get it all in a backpack and hand wash stuff in the sink but she doesn't conceive that she can carry on enough stuff for 18 days.

On a side subject, I want to chat about our Global Entry initiative.
We applied on line a couple of weeks ago. We went, yesterday, to BWI Global Entry CBP office as walk ins because our trip is so soon. (Our computer generated appointment was for August). The agent said he probably couldn't see us as walk ins because he had 30 appointments. After three groups with appointments showed up, we got our chance.
We were seen and accepted after an hour and a half. So Wife and I are "trusted travelers now". Yippeee!

Be sure to update your airline profile with your trusted traveler number so you'll get pre-check!

Just for purposes of others reading this thread - there actually is a way on the Condor site to buy a longer connection time. They commonly offer up the shortest one first and they're always too short for my comfort level. But if you scroll down a bit you'll find connections that are about 3.5 to 4 hours at Frankfurt. You can't really see the connection time on the Condor website but you can see the total flying time go up by about 4 hours.

And we have missed a connection on Condor/Lufthansa single ticket before (purchased from Condor). Lufthansa just rebooked us no problem.

I recently had a connection in Frankfurt with a 1 hour 40 min layover flying with Lufthansa. My flight departed late which left a 1 hour connection in Frankfurt. Unfortunately, passport control lines were so long that many of us missed our connecting flights. I was then put on a flight with yet another connection which did not depart for five hours. The trip was supposed to take just over 4 hours, but ended up over 13. A direct flight to my destination was 2 hours and 10 minutes. I won't make that mistake again. The advantage you may have is that you are arriving very early, so there may be a greater chance of additional flights that day if you are unable to make your connection.

I greatly appreciate the intelligent responses and will share with Wife.
Is this the case, we have to pass through passport control at Frankfort airport
during the connection?

You could go to the Lufthansa site and find their flight schedule Frankfurt-Amsterdam. Copy out the later departure times and flight numbers so you will have a better understanding of what could happen if you are bumped to a later flight. Also it helps to take a look at the Frankfurt airport website and perhaps print out a terminal map (smart-phone users may be able to download.)

Assuming I read your post correctly (your itinerary is BWI-FRA-AMS), yes, you have to clear passport control in Frankfurt. You are transferring from a non-Schengen flight (Baltimore-Frankfurt) to an internal Schengen flight (Frankfurt-Amsterdam) so you are required to enter the Schengen zone in Frankfurt.

In my experience, Schengen passport control is much less onerous than either US or UK passport control and American tourists are almost always summarily checked, stamped and passed through, but there's always a small chance you might get a more in-depth inspection.
