How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle???

My husband and I will be traveling from Venice to germany and Austria. We'd like to see Neuschwanstein what is the best way to get there. There is a night train to Munich, but then you have to back track 2.5 hours to get to Fussen, which is near the castle. I can't find a train from Venice to Fussen. There is a night train to Ruette, Austria, but it is 12 hours instead of 8 like the one to Munich. Is there a better, more efficiant way?

Thanks everyone! Can you tell me more about that tour? I looked on the websited and it costs 50 euros each, is it worth the money, or should we just do it ourselves? 10 1/2 hours is a long time for a tour, is it a lot of driving? Are there other tour groups that leave from Munich to see Neuschwanstein?

You could take a day train to Salzburg (5.5 hrs) and spend a night or two there first. Then it's a little less than 4 hrs by train from Salzburg to Füssen (via Munich). Or, you could go by train to Innsbruck first (5 hrs), but there's not a good connection from there to Füssen.
Could help you better if knew where your departure airport is, then would be able to tell if it would be better to visit Germany or Austria first.
Night trains aren't much fun (you miss the scenery and it's hard to sleep), so try to stick with day trains if possible.

Why not take a bus tour out of Munich? or Ruette? They will also take you to Lindau another great King Ludwig castle. Or rent a car out of Munich and see alot more of countryside. Driving is easy renting from Munich airport out and enjoy Ruette and Hallstatt they are wonderful places to visit along with the castles.

Jenny, I feel your pain. I just put a post up about a similar question. We're staying in Garmisch, which is less than 20 MILES from Fussen, but the busride there is 2 hours! They say it's because of all the mountains that there's no direct route... But you're in for a longer ride than I!

The night train from Venice does stop in Innsbruck, at 4:32, but from there the first connection to Füssen leaves at 6:34, changes at Garmisch and Reutte, gets into Pfronten at 9:42, from where you can take a bus and get to Füssen at 10:30.

Much better to stay on that train, get into Munich at 6:30, leave Munich at 6:52 and get into Füssen at 8:56. If you are traveling on a railpass, your trip from Munich to Füssen is covered under the 7 PM rule. If not, if you are arriving in Munich on a weekend, you can buy a Bayern-Ticket in Munich for €27, and it will cover the travel for both of you to Füssen (also any other travel by regional rail in Bavaria that day).

A tour from Munich may seem expensive but if you factor in admission charges alone and long wait times if you go independently suddenly you see the value of a 10 hr tour at 50 euros.
Admissions are approx 17 euro for Neusch & Hohen and about 7 euros for Linderhof.

According to the website posted by JB, above, entrance fees (~€15) are not included in the €49. So that is €49 plus €15 = €74, about $88. I would call that a lot of money.

Come out on the train, skip Linderhof, and see both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. One day round trip for two on the train is €27. You can reserve your tickets online and pick them up at the ticket kiosk.

Jenny, the tour is well worth the money and time. Our tour guide just happened to be an American that had been living in Germany for several years as he was married to a German lady.

He describes the historical background of certain areas we passed....so much history was given that we felt it was very worth while.

Lunch is arranged and reservations were made for us. Of course we had to pay for our lunch. We had approximately an hour stop in Oberammagau for shopping, etc. It was wonderful.
