How To Get From Nice to Salzburg?

We will be staying in Nice for a week and then thought about traveling to Salzburg for a few days before heading home. I've looked at the airfares but they are outrageous in price and the time it takes to get there. Does anyone know about the train and how long it would take from Nice? We would like to not spend more than 5-6 hours on training traveling. If Salzburg is too far can anyone recommend nice place in Austria to visit that would be a 5-6 hour train ride? Or is this even possible?
Thanks.

How about Switzerland? You could fly from Nice to Geneva on easyJet, leaving at 08:00 and arriving at 08:55. Then take trains from the airport to someplace you would like to visit. As an example, you could leave the airport at 10:01, change trains in Bern, and be in Interlaken by 12:57.

Use the German Rail query page. Use "Nice Ville" and "Salzburg Hbf". Anyway you cut it, Nice, on the Mediterranean in France, is a long ways from anywhere in Austria. Bregenz, on Bodensee, near Switzerland, is about the closest at 12 hours. It looks to me like around 17 hours, +/-, to Salzburg.

Did exactly this last year. Train to Ventimiglia (who would think a remote station had the best station store and morning cappucino in Italy?). On to Milan. Transfer to Verona, spend a day. Next day over the pass to Innsbruck, then to Salzburg. Even to Innsbruck you are looking at a REALLY long day, best broken up. Cheaper than through Switzerland, but no matter how you do it it's a long shot. However, we fell in love with Verona and are spending 5 days there in the middle of our trip this summer. T'would be easier to see more of southern France, or up to the French alps.
