We want to book our Florence-Paris night train before we arrive in Italy because we hear they sell out. We are family of 5 and want to be in the same room so I guess we can book a 6 couchette for ourselves (or two 3 sleepers). How do we book before we leave? We are Americans living in Japan...just to confuse things!

If you don't have a railpass, it shouldn't be that hard. Use the French Rail website (others can give you the URL and how to avoid being sent to RailEurope. Book an entire ticket, rail portion and accomodations).
If you are trying to do this with a railpass, good luck! You should have figured this out before springing for the pass.
