how reserve tix with pass

Am purchasing Swiss flexi pass and Germany pass. Considering reserving one trip from Zurich to Munich. I haven't been able to find how to make a reservation without buying the ticket. What am I missing? Also, maybe not necessary to reserve (family of four-- kids 13&16)...thoughts?

DB will not give you a seat res only for an international trip. One small issue is that the EC direct trains pass briefly through Austria, which is not included in your pass. so you might just have to wait until you are in Switzerland. The trains run every 2 hours. They are unlikely to sell out.

A Germany pass may not be cost effective. If you book ASAP (up to 92 days allowed) on the German Rail site, you can get an adult Europa-Spezial Schweiz discount fare as low as €29/person. Your 13-year-old will ride free. When you book you can buy a family seat reservation package of €9 total for all four of you.

Most daytime trains in those countries, including Zurich-Munich, don't require reservations. If you want seat assignments to keep the family together, you can make them together with your railpass order at http://ricksteves.raileurope.com/us/rail/point_to_point/triprequest.htm (say that you have a Germany-Switzerland pass, so you name both countries that you have covered). Or buy reservations at any train station in those countries, such as when you activate passes; about 4 euros per person for the reservation plus 4 euros each for the portion through Austria. The station agents will be familiar with this issue.
