Most refunds from retailers post back to your account within 1 to 3 days. Not with airlines that refund your money for a ticket, it seems. I'm going on 7 days of waiting for the credit card to be refunded.

No I haven't, I waited much longer. BA cancelled a flight on June 3rd. In the text and an e-mail they sent, they reported I could get a "full refund." Money was deposited on 8/2 after numerous e-mails and calls. As they only cancelled half of my flight and I returned on BA, I expected (roughly) a 50% refund...... nope. I now have a letter into their offices in England (only way to challenge a refund amount-no calling or e-mailing these guys) asking for half. I'm not saying BA is a bad airline (in fact, one of my favorites) or they are different from anyone else, but so far it has been a struggle.
I had an experience similar to Ray's but mine was with United. It took a bit more than a month for the credit to appear and the way that they valued the portion of the trip that had a problem was ridiculously low so I got back less money than I was expecting. I argued with them for months about it even going so far as to send certified letters to various individuals at United but I eventually gave up because it was going nowhere.
I have had recent refunds from United and British Air. The BA refund was visible on my online credit card statement within 48 hours and back in my available balance in 72 hours. The United refund appeared as soon as I did the online refund request and was available in 24 hours.
Just lucky I guess?
Last year I had a refund to my credit card from Delta 24 hours after I called them...
Earlier this summer, Delta cancelled a flight we had for September. They put us on another flight (actually two flights) which was unacceptable to us. (It involved flying to Paris via Detroit with a 7-8 hour layover in Paris before flying on to Venice. Ugh!) I called to request a change and they agreed to my proposal. Unfortunately there were no comfort seats available on the new flight. I pointed out that I had paid for comfort seats that I was not going to get, and they said they would refund the fees (about $80 for each ticket). I checked my credit card account online the next day and was pleasantly shocked to see they had already processed the refunds.
I've never had to claim an airline refund, but I have one thought about Ray's less-than-50% experience: There can be major differences in the taxes charged on international flights, depending on which airport(s) you connect through as well as your departure and arrival points. When looking for frequent-flier availability, I've had the same destination (but different airlines and/or transfer points) show taxes varying from $7 to over $100 one-way. That could lead to substantial disparities in the refund values of the two halves of a round-trip ticket.
Our refund took months, like maybe 4 or 5? With Delta/ Air France. Weather delayed departure, missed connection to Paris and comfort plus seats for which we had paid. I requested a refund and was told it would take a month or so to process. Several months/calls later an agent apologized, saying it had been screwed up. She offered to refund the difference immediately, or asked if we would accept vouchers for future travel. The vouchers were double the cost of our seats. We chose the vouchers.
