How inconsistent are Italian trains?

I've been told that you can not count on the Italian train schedules. How inconsistent or late are they in general?

In general, the slower regional "milk-run" type trains can run behind schedule. But the faster Eurostar and IC trains are very reliable and stick to the schedule for the most part. The efficiency of the Italian Rail system has improved quite a bit over the years.

One other thing not to count out are strikes. They can happen at any time and may cause an otherwise well-oiled machine to de-rail, so to speak. But during strikes some trains still run, albeit on limited schedules.

I agree with Michael. The local trains could be off a bit. In some cases, they'll hold local trains in a small station to let a Eurostar roar on through. They'll do the same in larger stations where the Eurostar will stop. Again, they'll hold the local slightly to let the ES get out in front.

I know I have always read/heard the knock on Italian trains and maybe it is true in the more rural areas. But our experience over many years is that the trains are mostly on time give or take a few minutes. The only inconsistency that we have notice is the track/gate/bin assignments. The most unreliable is the paper schedules posted in the display windows. In the big stations, like Rome, the overhead track signs will often change within minutes of an arrival. We have learned not to go down the track until just a few minutes prior to the train arrival or when we actual see the train pulling in. Watch the board carefully.

I would agree, we have had few issues with Italian Trains, most running right on time. The most late trains have been the small ones when traffic is heavy, though of all countries I have travelled in, nearly all issues with breakdowns or severe waits have occurred in Italy, so be prepared.
