We are going to Spain in late August. I only need a few train tickets and will buy point to point. At this point, Rail Europe, Renfe, etc give me an error that it's too early to buy tickets. How far out are they available?

It depends on the route. I see prices up to Sept. 4 on Renfe on the AVE from Barcelona to Madrid and Madrid to Sevilla, as well as Madrid to Granada (not an AVE). Those can be purchased now. I didn't check other routes. Don't use Raileurope. If you can't get your credit card to work on Renfe, then buy one set of tickets from Petrabax or Rumbo.es and try Renfe agains after that.
