Has anyone stayed at the Le New Hotel Gare du Nord? We have an early train to AMS and want to be very close to the station. It's got a good price and mostly good reviews from several hotel sites. Any other suggestions?
Like I said, it was decent...If I were spending a week in Paris this would NOT be the area I would choose. However, if you've only got 1 night and you arrive AND depart at Gare du Nord, then the New Hotel is an ideal place to stay!
If you saw good reviews on Tripadvisor, I'd go for it. There are dozens of hotels near the train station so Tripadvisor probably collects the most reviews from people who have stayed there. Many, many more than you're likely to get from here. But I wouldn't worry too much about being right next to the train station. There are more interesting neighborhoods on Metro lines that go directly to the Gare du Nord.
We stayed there, and it was literally out the door of the train station and across the street. We even used the luggage cart from the train station to wheel our luggage across the street to the New Hotel. There was also a metro entrance right at the front door of this hotel. It was a decent place with air-conditioning.
My impression of the neighborhood around Gare du Nord was "I'm glad I'm not staying around here." Really, the Paris Metro has such an extensive reach that there's no reason not to stay in a better neighborhood.
There are certainly some very inexpensive hotels, especially as you walk north, but have others have noted, this neighborhood is not everyone's cup of tea.
Since the metro takes you to Gare du Nord, you really only add a few minutes and open up a whole lot of places to stay in Paris.
I stayed at Ibis Paris Gare du Nord Chateau Landon. Decent, clean, budget hotel w/ air conditioning. You can walk to Gare du Nord (or Gare de L'Est) in less than 5 minutes.
As a woman travelling alone on an extended stay, I had no problems with this neighborhood (even walking back from Metro station late at night). Immediately in front of the train station you may see a few strange characters, but there are also a dozen sidewalk cafes/restaurants that are open late and are well-lit. Around the corner you might pass 1 or 2 porn theaters - but I never saw any customers hanging around outside and the windows are blacked out.
The Ibis is in the center of a middle class Parisian neighborhood with apartments, restaurants, bakeries and other service shops.
I've been to way more American cities (Philly, DC, NYC, LA, SanFran) where I've seen more shady transactions and porn shops than this particular neighborhood in Paris.
