Hi-
My family of four will be having an overnight layover at Amsterdam airport. Can anyone suggest a hotel very near the airport? We will probably have dinner in Amsterdam and then fly out the following morning.

It is not near the airport, but we stayed at Hotel Prinsengracht in Amsterdam with our toddler the night before flying out.
How early is your flight? What day of the week? It's a pretty easy series of connections Tram/Train to the airport, but you do have to be aware that Sundays / Holidays have fewer choices. Throughout most of the day, and on most days, there's a train every 10 to 15 minutes, and it takes only 15 to 20 minutes.
I would, personally, prefer to stay in Amsterdam and deal with transportation in the morning.

Cathy check out the NL Hotel near Schiphiol.http://www.nl-hotel.com/ It was really nice and the staff were super. They have very easy shuttle service to the airport. I would call it "fancy" but the rates were great. They have a very good and comfortable restaurant there too.

I would suggest just staying in Amsterdam near the train station. The train from Centraal Station gets you back into the middle of Schiphol so no need to look for the airport or take a shuttle back to the airport. Buy your ticket round trip( must have euros) from Schiphol train station, let the ticket agent your plans and you will not have to buy a ticket the next morning. I stayed at the Ibis Amsterdam ( mentioned in RS) steps away from the train station. It was very basic but we stayed in the new section and it was sufficient for one night. Hopefully you can do this without luggage which would make it easier. FYI; the last boat tour across from Centraal Station left at 9pm if you are interested.
