Hotel Trains: Avoid Exortibant Prices?

Wow...an overnight train from Paris to Madrid, recommended route by Rick, is about $100 per person, on top of your railpass. This is way out of my price range: we're backpackers!! I noticed that in ETBD Rick says "Cheaper options exist and involve changing trains at the Spanish border." Does anyone have any recommendations or comments on this?

I looked at this trip and there is night train leaving Paris 19:43 arriving Madrid about 10 a.m. (no changing) Sounds like the perfect situation for you. The T-6 beds are about $25-30 per person with a pass.

Andrea,

Here is an example of what Rick suggests:
Take the Corail Lunea 4053 leaving Paris Austerlitz at 23:14 and arriving at Irun at 07:32. Change to the Corail 202 leaving Irun at 08:15 and arriving at Madrid Chamartin at 15:12.
