Hopping around Europe

My wife and I are starting to plan a trip to Venice and Paris in middle fall of 2009 and I am trying to price flights from Venice to Paris. I have tried mixing up dates/days of the week to find the best bargain, and tried Rick's suggested sites for flights inside Europe, but all the flights seem very expensive. Any input or suggestions as to why, and how to get the price down? I am also looking at trains, but I only need info on flights from any helpful people out there.

I don't know what Rick's suggested sites are, but I check whichbudget.com, flylc.com, and skyscanner.net. When I find the mentioned airlines, I go directly to their websites to check out prices and book tickets. A quick check shows myair and easyjet covering that route. Using 21 October as an arbitrary date, I find myair fares Venice-Paris as low as 32 Euro pp, all in, while easyjet's sits at 43 Euro. However, these are completely non-refundable, non-changeable tickets, and you must be very familiar with these airlines' check in and baggage limitations policies. You might also consider checking the "big boys" like Air France and Alitalia. On routes where there is competiton from discount airlines, they will often offer comparable fares and better schedules.
