Is the bus stop on bus #AD122 far from the Homestead ruins and wall? Is there a better place to see ruins and the wall?
Have no idea what you are asking? A country might be useful. We are not mind readers. The only thing I can think of that might be close is Hadrian's Wall and the Housesteads Fort. Give us a hint.
We need help on information about taking the bus #AD122 across Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Where does the bus stop at Homestead ruins? Is it a long walk from the bus stop to the ruins, museum and wall?
Thanks for any information. Maybe it is just best to skip Hadarian's Wall. Getting any helpful information seems to present so many problems.
Google this: National Trust Hadrian's Wall & Housesteads Fort. Bus No. AD122 is mentioned there so I think that may help you. It seems you are using Homestead rather than Housestead in your search.
Hi Bernard,
We visited Hadrian's Wall on June 15, making two stops. First, we had lunch at the Twice-Brewed Pub, an old atmospheric pub which is right on the B highway which parallels the wall. It is filled with pictures and information about the wall and you can also get some info from the bartender. It is located at about the mid-point of the wall, near Hexham.
Then we drove to the Once-Brewed Visitors Centre which is about 500 feet away around the corner. (Google a map--you will see all of these spots.) Leave your car there and walk about a half-mile to the wall. This is supposed to be the only section you can actually walk on. Getting up on it involves climbing a steep flight of about one-hundred stairs. You then walk east about a mile and see the famous "Robin Hood" sycamore tree. (It's the tree the little boy hides in at the beginning of Prince of Thieves.) The walk involves some ups and downs and you need good shoes.
When you finish your walk, you can drive farther down the road to Vindolanda Fort where there is a current archeology dig. We didn't have time to do that.
Retrieving your car, drive east a few miles and visit Housesteads Roman Fort. It has a large parking lot and is a much easier walk than the one at Once-Brewed, but not so scenic.
I found a lot of info about the wall on the internet. I think we used hadrianswall.org. If I find a better web site, I will post it later today.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!! We will be traveling by train and could catch the bus in Newcastle or Carlisle. Newcastle seems best since they have left luggage available. Since my wife walks with a cane, we are concerned about how long and hard the walk is from the #AD122 bus stop to Housesteads fort and ruins. this looks like the place with most information.
We didn't use the bus but I imagine it stops at Housesteads, one of the main attractions. From the visitors' centre it is maybe a thousand feet to the fort? (Just guessing--it wasn't a long walk, but not right next to the VC either.) The walk is a gentle uphill, so I think your wife could probably do it with a cane. I think it was paved, but I don't remember that for sure.
If you continue on the bus as far as Once/Twice Brewed, you will be able to see the famous tree a few miles before Twice Brewed. You could get out there for a pint, a coffee, or whatever, then get the bus back to Newcastle. Don't buy a hamburger, probably one of the worst ones I ever had! But good fish and chips.
We have been to the wall twice--it was very windy both times, so it felt chilly.
