We've hired a care through AVIS to travel through Tuscany, and want to drop the car off outside of Rome. Our plan is to avoid the traffic (and possibly getting lost in Rome) and just getting a train into Rome city. AVIS haven't responded yet. Any suggestions ?
You could drop the car off at Orvieto in Umbria, IF Avis has a rental location there. You can go to the Avis website and determine whether Avis has a location in certain towns. If they don't, you could switch rental car companies. The advantage of Orvieto is that it is relatively convenient train ride into Rome from there. I'm not sure I would wait for Avis to respond to any specific question you have asked them.
Orvieto is a fairly large city--an easy commute to Rome (less than 1 hr). Like Kent said, if Avis isn't there, find out who is. You could compare prices and car companies with AutoEurope. I'm sure they have a connection in Orvieto.
We are doing the same thing and Hertz has a office accross from the train station. There are lots of trains into Rome at very low prices.
