High airfare?

Good Morning,

My husband and I were lucky enough to use our United airline miles for 2 tickets to Edinburgh during Thanksgiving week. We just received the go ahead that we can bring my 16 yr old step son with us. We are out of miles so when I went to book his ticket from Denver (he'll fly out of denver with us & back into kc), I was shocked to see airfare was $2600 for economy! Ive tried several different options & they all are coming back at the same rate. Unfortunately with this being his first over seas travel, he needs to be with us on United so other airlines are out of the question.

Ive checked other destinations throughout Europe and all are the same $2k+ rate. Is this just "end of the fiscal year" pricing or are we going to be stuck paying this rate?

Are you and your husband flying RT Denver through an east coast airport to Edinburgh and back the same way? If so, why don't you have your step son fly the same route/dates with you on United for about $1,400 then purchase a OW ticket for him the next day from Denver to KC? On Frontier and United those OW flights are about $100 in late November.

Except if you want to fly him back on the Sunday after Thanksgiving -- that day, like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, is zoo city for domestic flights, with prices through the roof.

Hi Mona,

Our tickets are roundtrip from Denver to Edinburgh Nov 20-26th. I just looked and its showing me a cost of $2716.....we already have him a ticket from KC to Denver on the 19th. Ive tried to move our flight to a Saturday departure but it would cost us more miles (so we would have to purchase the additional).

Oh, and if the location on my profile is confusing....our home is in TN but my husband is in the Army, stationed in Co.

Im sure airfare couldnt possibly go any higher so for now im checking multiple times a day to see if it drops or if the amount of seats drop in which case we would definitely purchase asap.

It's Thanksgiving week. Everyone wants to fly somewhere. Seats are scarce.

I just looked at United and for the days you are flying, the lowest priced economy ticket I can find on the United site is $4,400.00 for the round trip. (United shows flights at the cost per flight on the booking page, not for the full round trip meaning you have to select both to get a total price. It would be nice if they would just show a round trip price.)

Looks like you have 4 choices:
1. Pay cash for the excessive amount United wants.
2. Buy enough miles to get a ticket. (No guarantee a mileage seat is still available.)
3. Put him on a different airline with lower priced tickets and hope he can handle the possible multiple plane changes along the way. (Delta has tickets for half of what United wants.)
4. Go without him.

There is one other choice......if your step son can't fly alone......either you or your husband takes the third ticket on a cheaper airline and meets up with the rest in Edinburgh.

I like Frank II's idea...you all get to see Edinburgh and your stepson does not have to travel alone.

If you are able to transfer one of the FF tickets to your stepson, one of you could fly on British Airways on those specific dates for about $1400. Or redeposit your two flight miles and purchase 3 tickets @ about $1400 each and use your FF miles for a later flight.

If flying into another European city London, Munich, or Madrid is cheaper, there are some low cost European airlines that could get you to Edinburgh.
I fly from the east coast and it is tickets are cheaper for me to go to Madrid. For example easyjet is $59.00 from Madrid to Edinburgh, (Nov. 23), from Munich (which I believe is one of United's European hubs) it is 65.00 to Edinburgh, and Ryanair from London to Edinburgh it is $20.00!
I have used some of these low cost airlines to get to my final destination very cheaply when I could not make my paid or FF tickets work to get to the final European destination.

I just checked Google Flight (great tool!) and found premium seats round trip from Denver to London during your time period for $1599 on Delta and $1635 on Brit. Airways.

FYI, using dates that included the Thanksgiving Sunday, I found fares around $1,200 on www.itasoftware.com
for Denver-Edinburgh-KC. The key is to use a multi-destination search function. That site doesn't sell tickets but you can see where to shop.
