Hertz through AAA?

We're finalizing a rental car for our upcoming trip. We could save a little by going through AAA for a Hertz rental. AAA uses Allianz for the insurance. It appears about $165 for the $75,000, "one trip rental car protector" no deductible trip protection.

It seems less than what we've paid before for the no headaches, no questions asked coverage. We're hoping we aren't missing something.

Has anyone had experience with Hertz through AAA?

What country are you renting a car in?

No experience with AAA insurance, but right now I'm feeling pretty positive about AAA. We've only had it a few months. We purchased it so we could get IDP for free and to give it a try. Well, our car broke down in the middle of Oregon and had to be towed 30 miles. Called AAA, didn't see a bill or anything. The tow truck driver submitted everything to AAA. Couldn't have been easier.

Jules,
We have been members of AAA for many, many years. Of course, they have made lots of $ off us as we've had many fortunate years in which we did not need assistance. However, there were many years when we needed several tows or car doors unlocked. Before everything went online, we made great use of free maps and guides for travel in North America. We have also taken advantage of discounts with a variety of businesses.

This will be the first time we have booked a rental through AAA. We'll see how it goes.

I book rental cars from Hertz quite often using AAA discount. However, I have never used their insurance. Instead, I use enhanced insurance on my American Express card. It cost $19.95 for every rental and give me up to $75000 coverage.

I usually book through AutoEurope. They don't always have the best base rates, but their 'full coverage' rates are tough to beat.

Also, note that AAA insurance products are not the same as towing coverage in the US. They are completely outsourced products for which AAA serves as little more than a sales agent.

I had a horrible experience renting Hertz through AAA domestically in the US. I offer this as something to investigate. For reference, I’ve spent hundreds of days renting cars from generally Avis (for work). I am mid 40s, and have never had an issue having my similarly aged spouse be a free secondary driver, nor have I ever had to pay extra. 3 weeks ago, I had to pay $200 to have my spouse added as a secondary driver because somehow, the rental through AAA didn’t transfer my hertz loyalty number and if you’re not renting through Hertz loyalty, the spouse isn’t free. There was a ton of tangentially related nonsense, and resulted in me getting both that fee as well as a few hundred dollar discount from Hertz. None of this was worth the small discount through AAA. Just investigate that portion, and you’ll be set. 😳
