hertz or avis France

I can rent a car using my aeroplan points, but only two compaines on the program for my use are Avis or Hertz. I am looking at renting a car in France( Tours). Does anyone have any experience or opinion on which company is more reliable?
Thanks

One's about as good as the other. If it goes bad, Hertz seems to have more locations (generally speaking, around the world) where you could switch one out. Thus, they tend to get my business, price being equal.

Pat: I used to rent almost exclusively with Hertz when I was doing a lot of business traveling and benefiting from the convenience of Hertz Gold. So, I also used Hertz when on vacation, too, and just booked on their website for rentals in Paris (not sure if it' still there, but they had an office in Esplanade de les Invalides at the Air France bus terminal) and at FRA. Hertz is quite professional and I still rent through them, but they tend to be a little higher than everyone else (sometimes a lot higher). If prices are nearly the same, I still like Hertz. As Ed said, they seem to have more offices just about everywhere, and I think their car selections are better, too. When I'm paying the bill and Hertz pricing is higher, I choose someone else, usually Enterprise, Alamo, or Budget (Alamo and Enterprise are the same company...AVIS and Budget are also one in the same). I haven't rented with AVIS for years, but I did notice something weird in their pricing when I was renting a couple of weeks ago...they had a low rate but charged for miles...that's almost unheard of now. And while that info was available, it was a tiny footnote at the bottom of the screen. I thought it was kind of weird. I can't really comment on the reliability of AVIS, because it's just been too long since I used them. I've used Hertz several times just this year and can safely say that they're always reliable for me...have been for years. Cheers!

Thank you michael.
My other concern is that since I am using Aeroplan points, its not clear through Aeroplan what exactly that covers,, I am going to assume its only the car rental and all other fees and insurances are extra. My thoughts are perhaps they charge as much for those as just renting on my own with another company ( looked at Kemwell/AutoEuro?) I think I need to do more research,,but if anyone has used their aeroplan points that would help to hear from them in particular( think its only a Canadian plan though ,, so may not have much luck )

I can't help you with your questions about Aeroplan, but I can endorse Avis. I've rented with Avis in Sweden, France, Germany, and Italy (all in the past five years) and have always had a good experience. I have Avis Preferred status, which may help. In Malmo, Sweden last year, I had reserved a basic compact car, and Avis upgraded me to a brand new Honda Insight hybrid, complete with navigation system and other goodies. It got about 4.6 liters/100 km, or 50 miles/gal (of definite benefit when gas was the equivalent of $9/gal or so).
