Here we go again, Delta cancelled our flight

I thought I would let everyone know about our experience today.
We received an email from Delta cancelling our outbound flight to Zagreb. We were transferring through Amsterdam from JFK - 2 flights.
They booked us in a flight to Boston, then Amsterdam, then Zagreb. Nope, not taking 3 flights.

We called Delta through the contact info on their app. We did not google Delta phone numbers or any other info. Again, we called directly through the app. We had a 40 minute wait time so we chose to have them call us back at the same number we called on.

While waiting for the call back, we checked new flights, again on the app, and had 2 choices which were good for us. One through Amsterdam and one through Paris. Our original flight was Delta/Air France. We paid for a Delta Comfort flight.

The seats on the Amsterdam flight would have been in the main cabin, in a 2 seater row way in the back. We would have to request a refund for the price difference after the flight occurred. The agent couldn’t tell us how much it would be.
The seats on the Paris flight were in Delta Comfort in the last row in the 4 seater row, aisle and next to aisle.
We decided on the Paris flight cause we figured we already paid the money back in June and the thought of more paperwork didn’t appeal to us.

I am posting this because of all the problems some posters have been having with changed flights and scammers.

The only time money was mentioned was when my husband said we wouldn’t mind an upgrade on a better flight before we presented our flight choices. The agent said First Class was available for xx amount of money - obviously we passed but it was nice he tried.

Anyway, just a reminder to be careful. Downloading and using the airlines’ app would be the best way to proceed.

Thank you Barbara

I am the person who got bilked out of $759 after American cancelled my flight putting me on one that seriously did not work.

I googled aa.com and accessed a fraudster. I rebooked my flight with the fraudster not realizing that I was not talking to an employee of AA

I have been able to recover $450 but am out over $300.00. Citi ruled against me because they said I did receive services from the fraudster and I did. Now, I have. a password on my flight so that the fraudster can not access it to cancel or change,

My trip is the end of September so we will see how it goes. I will be letting forum know..

There have been others posting on forum about scammers and getting scammed or almost getting scammed.

I have written down the correct AA number to call when I have to talk to someone at AA

Why does calling through the app protect you? Others have said that they always call through the app.

I’m living out the end of a 3-day flight story right now. No flights for me tomorrow- yeah! My original trip was three flights. It became additional hops in Europe because Air France cancelled a flight as we were in line to board for Milan.

One of the best pieces of advice I can recommend is to check any hotel on Booking.com that an airline gives you a voucher for a cancelled flight. As I was walking to the Air France shuttle, I looked up the reviews of the hotel, and whew, no way! I booked the Innside Paris Airport Hotel and made the best of a sad situation. It’s a very nice hotel for $100!

How do you still not understand this? It was explained to you by me and others a while ago...through the secure app, on your cellphone, you do not have to "look up" or google the airline number, nor do you have to enter the number on your keypad from something you wrote down on a scrap of paper, a step that opens you up to making a mistake, entering the numbers in the wrong order. The number for the airline is in the secure app, and you click the button. Foolproof.

Bostonphil, I am very happy to hear you did get some kind of refund. I know it wasn’t all, but as our mothers would say, lesson learned.
I remember your tread, so when we go the email my husband was sure to be extra careful.
Have a wonderful trip, you will love Japan.

Barbara, just an observation but for us the 2-seaters in the back are fine if not the VERY last row adjacent to the toilets. A row up from that was fine. Beats the three-seats on the side unless the middle seat is free. IMO, of course.

Any reason why the flight was cancelled? I'm always curious about those things. Mechanical issue? The vibe was off?

They didn’t tell us why it was cancelled. I don’t remember my husband asking.
Having the 2 seaters is why we usually book premium economy.

I cannot recall a flight change/cancellation with Delta that has not improved our itinerary. I have been planning our itinerary for Australia and discovered it'd be helpful to leave a few days earlier, but when I had explored that idea it was cost prohibitive. Then, our flights to Australia were changed. Our layover in LAX went from an hour to five hours. Our original itinerary had us going MSP to Detroit to LAX to Sydney. I called and took the call back in about an hour. In that time, I researched possible options, and determined what I would like and what would be a reasonable request.

When I got the call back, right away, the agent found me a much better itinerary eliminating the stop in Detroit. Then I told her that in a perfect world, I'd leave two days earlier and arrive earlier in the morning. She responded with, we can do that.

This year, I don't have status with Delta, it doesn't seem to impact customer service. When Delta changes my arrangements, I take a breath, do a little research and see if I can come up with something that actually helps me. I'm calm, I'm polite and things usually go well. In this particular situation, I had purchased one of the tickets with skymiles the other cash. Both tickets were a "heck of a deal", in my opinion. I didn't expect to end up with an itinerary that was substantially better, but I'm quite pleased that I did.

Happy it worked out for you Jules, your’s is a rarity.
Last October our direct flight from Lisbon was delayed then canceled the same morning we were leaving. They wanted to put us on a flight the next day. After numerous phone calls and 2 hours, we left on an Air Royal Moroccan flight home with a change in Casablanca. And believe me, there was nothing Royal about our flight. It was Delta. Why we keep flying them I don’t know.
Our next trip is to Italy in May. We may have to look at different airlines.

Barbara, OMGosh, cancelling, the day of, that's brutal. On our most recent trip our flight home from Venice was cancelled the day before. It had to do with us flying Delta on a codeshare with KLM, and workers were striking. It wasn't really either airlines fault, but what a pain, sometimes travel is just not easy.

You have more options where you live. I don't blame you for trying something else.
