Help with Vienna/Melk Connection

Hello All,

So this is a semi-complicated question with two main parts. My wife and I will be in different parts of Europe, connecting back together in Melk.

Question Part 1 - My wife's journey. This is a mulit-faceted question. She will be coming into Vienna via plane from Munich. She needs to get to Melk as quickly as possible as her flight from Munich lands at 20:15 in Vienna and she'll still have to check into the hotel in Melk when she gets there. So, what is the quickest way? The Rick Steves Vienna book only talks about how to get from the airport into town, and then gives you the cheap option which takes you to the Wien-Mitte Bahnhof. If she does go into town, it looks like she'll need to be at the Westbahnhof to catch a train to Melk. So first, can she go directly to Melk from the airport via train instead of going into town? If not, is there a way for her to go to the Westbahnhof from the airport to make her transfer quicker? And also, is it better to buy the Melk ticket prior to her arrival or when she gets there (since she doesn't know her exact timing with the flight - in case it is delayed and keeping in mind that she won't be arriving to Vienna until 20:15 and will then have to take the train from the airport into town before getting on a train to Melk - I don't know how late ticket counters stay open)?

Question Part 2 - My journey. My question is much simpler. I will be coming into Vienna's Westbahnhof by train from Munich. I'll then need to transfer to a train to Melk. Is it better to buy the ticket there or prior to arrival?

So now that you are thoroughly confused, any ideas?

Thanks!

So we couldn't find a train to Melk that would get her there before midnight or one AM by the time she makes all the connections. We've now booked her a room in Vienna for the night to go to Melk in the morning.

Is it advisable to buy tickets from the airport to Westbahnhof early or it is fairly easy to do once she arrives? We just don't want to have her arrive and the train/bus to be full.
