Help with tricky connection – Munich to Castiglione d’Orcia in one day

Hi all,

I'm hoping for some advice on the most efficient way to travel from Munich to Castiglione d’Orcia in mid-April next year. We're arriving from Australia for a wedding and will be coming directly from Munich. We’re not planning to hire a car, so we’re looking for the easiest public transport connection to reach Castiglione in one day.

I’ve been researching options like flying to either Florence or Rome and then taking a train and bus, but I’m finding it a bit tricky to piece together the most practical route — especially for a same-day connection.

Has anyone done this journey or something similar? Would love any recommendations on:

How to get from there to Castiglione d’Orcia without a car

Any potential pitfalls or timing issues I should be aware of

Thanks so much in advance — really appreciate any help or insight you can share!

As I see it, the problem will be public transportation to Castiglione late in the day; in the afternoon there are limited options from Siena and it looks like a couple of changes are involved. In-air time will obviously be much less than train time. Still, you have to reach Munich airport and spend time there, as well as transferring from Florence airport to the train station, then onto Siena or Chiusi.

Here's what I'd do. Presently, with fewer transfers:

7:32 Munich to Bolzano. 13.12 Bolzano to Florence. 17:02 Florence to Chiusi (arrive 18:35)

OR

9:33 Munich to Bologna. 17:25 Bologna to Chiusi (arrive 19:48)

Taxi Chiusi to Castiglione, if you can arrange for one, about 125 AUD. From Siena will be about 50 more.

Thank you Gunderson. I will look this option up. We will be staying at the airport at either the Hilton or Novatel so we won't need travel there.
Now thinking of spreaading the travel over 2 days. Flight to where you suggest either Bologna or Bolzano stay there nioght there or Florence and then connections the folling day...
Will take a lookm at your ideas, thank you!

Places that are hard to get to without a car are usually also hard to get around in without a car. That town has about 5 buses a day. So you probably would want to rent a car there anyway, So I would fly Munich - Florence and rent a car from there.
