We are flying on Sept 19th to Berlin to Schonefeld; then would like to rail from Berlin on the 23rd to Prague with an overnight at Dresden; then three days later on the 27th rail from Prague to Vienna. How do we get the best tickets for two adults? Should we booked all the trains at Berlin? in euros? in Czech crowns? Which trains station at Berlin is best to start the journey?
If you purchase your tickets online from German Rail, well in advance, you can get Berlin Hbf to Dresden for €29 per person and Dresden to Prague for €19 per person. I think your best bet is to buy Prague to Vienna when you arrive in Prague with Czech crowns.
Thanks. Two more questions:
(1) If I buy the ticket online for the special fare for the Berlin-Prague leg, am I committed to that particular train? Can I wait and buy the tickets when we get into Berlin or might the special fares be sold out by then?
(2) I also stumbled onto this SC Pendolino site for Praha-Wien leg:
http://www.scpendolino.cz/en/cenik/jizdne-rakousko/:/page.xhtml
where they quote a Wien SCspezial introductory discount. Does anyone know about this Wien SCspezial and what the restrictions might be? Should we wait and buy it at Praha or can we buy it online for this price? I can't seem to find a way to buy international tickets on this site.
Was able to purchase over the web for only 29EUROS a EuroCity train ticket from Berlin to Prague with a overnight stopover in Dresden. DB Bahn allows for stopovers, up to 48 hours, by using the Via button, as I searched for a train from Berlin to Prague. After clicking Via.. I entered the stopover city, Dresden, and the length of the stopover, which in my case was 20hours. Got this tip from the TripAdvisor Berlin Forum.
As for the SC Pendolino Praha-Wien leg, I found (in Czech) that these special train tickets are not sold over the web but must be purchased directly at the train station. My plan now is to purchase the SC Pendolino tickets for the Praha-Wien leg when my Berlin-Prague train arrives at Praha-Holesovice.
Be advised that the €29 fare from Berlin to Prague via Dresden was a Dauer-Spezial fare, which is train specific, non-exchangeable, non-refundable. The train number, time, and date of the train from Dresden to Prague will be printed on the ticket, and the ticket will only be valid for that train. Make sure you catch that train or you will have to buy another ticket at full fare.
This is not to discourage people from taking advantage of this great deal, just warning them that they must stay with the original schedule.
To answer question #1, above, although the question is now moot because you have the tickets, the Dauer-Spezial does commit you to specific trains, and, the special requires at least a 3 day advance purchase, and the lowest priced tickets are often sold out well before that date.
Thanks for the reminder. The trains we got were all at the most convenient times for us, so we will be there at the train station early. Did not want to chance losing the good fare by waiting until we arrive in Berlin next week, especially since the stopover was for free.
