We will be leaving our cruise ship in Civitavecchia and need to take the train to Monterrosa. We will then need to take a train from Monterrosa to La Spezia 2 days later. Can someone please help with how best to do that and whether a rail pass would be better than individual tickets and any other tips you may have. Thanks.
For so many travelers, it's so easy to go for the railpass thinking that they will avoid so much other hassle (like real travel homework). The P2P ticket from Civitavecchia to Monterosso is 28.90Euro. If you MUST have this ticket in advance, you can get it at www.italiarail.com for $51 (32.90Euro). Not much of a cost penalty. The cost from Monterosso to La Spezia is about 3Euro. I don't know where you are going from La Spezia but it's hardly worth the expense of a quick railpass.
Cathy - if you are only planning two train trips a pass may not be the most economical. If you are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with train travel, Euraide may ease your mind. I worked with the US office via phone and fax for several of my train segments (during a month of traveling) including night trains. Have a nice trip! Michelle

As is almost always the case, the best train schedule inforation can be found at:

The fares will not be listed but point-to-point tickets will almost certainly be cheaper than a pass.
Agreed -- those are short hops. The point-to-point tickets will almost certainly be cheaper than a pass in this case.
Agreed....a pass will be far too expensive. Check out prices at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html . You can even purchase them in advance there, if you can work through the registration and payment problems some people encounter. If not, then simply purchase the tickets at the train station. If you can buy them up to the day before, you may be able to still get the "Amica" fares, which are 20% off. If you are set on your travel times, get all your tickets at the first station.
