Help with Reading Bus Timetables

We'll be in Alba for a few days in October. While I plan to rent a car at least one day to visit towns to the south I was hoping to be able to use buses on at least some excursions so that I could enjoy wine tastings. The site http://www.buscompany.it/ati/orari-localita indicates we should be able to bus to Neive and Barbaresco using either lines 62 or 178. But from what I can figure out, Line 178 doesn't cover Barbaresco and it doesn't appear the Line 62 has a stop there. Am I reading this correctly?

Also, can someone tell me what the column headings mean? Is it a combination of Line and Bus Number? I'm assuming the columns are the stop times? What information is the stepped chart in the lower left of the Line page providing?

Sorry for all of the questions. We're from a small town and have never dealt with buses before. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Thanks Jazz. My confusion came from looking at the page for Line 62. Barbaresco is listed but there was no yellow dot, which I thought indicated a stop.

Frank,
Your proposed excursions may not work due to the times that the buses are running to your destinations.
Keep in mind that most public buses are for locals who are getting to/from work, or for school children who are getting to/from school.

So, let's look at route for Bus 62. Notice the arrow next to the route this bus takes. The right side of the timestable indicates the route Alba to Castiglione Tinella, and the left side of the timetables indicates the route in reverse; Castiglione Tinella to Alba.

  • Look at the right side of the timestables: ALBA to CASTIGLIONE TINELLA

  • Bus 62 departs ALBA at the following times( look at the bottom of the timestable) 7.45, 10.40, 13.15, 13.20, 14.05, 16.40, 17.30 [Notice the days that the bus runs this route, some times are offered Monday- Friday (Lunedi a Venerdi) and some only run on Saturday (Sabato), etc, etc...]

  • Now follow the column of each time and notice that there are only 2 buses that stop at Barbaresco; the bus departing Alba at 13.15 and the one at 14.05.

Now for the return trip BARBARESCO to ALBA:

  • Look at the left side of the timestable
  • There is only one bus departing Barbaresco at 7.05 -- [but no bus in the afternoon]

It looks like it's the same story with Bus 178 [ALBA to/from NEVIGLIE] This bus departs Alba at 13.15 and 14.05, but then again, there is no bus returning to Alba in the afternoon/evening

I've not traveled to this region of Italy (yet), but I'd suggest contacting your hotel, apartment, or B&B host and ask the best way to travel to your desired destinations. Both Barbaresco and Neive are very close to Alba so your other option (if you don't want to drive) may be a taxi (or possibly a tour?)

To answer your other question:

What information is the stepped chart in the lower left of the Line page providing?

This indicates the zones and you can check the price for traveling from point A to point B.
So from Alba to Barbaresco it's 3 zones (follow the column down from Alba to Barbaresco) then check the price table to the right and look for "fascia" (zone) 3 (or "C" ) and it gives you the price of the ticket.

Hope this helps.

Have a wonderful trip!

Priscilla,

Thank you very much for your explanation! It clears up all of my questions.

I was considering asking our hosts about options and will pursue that line.
