Help! Trying to get from Normandy to London!

I am planning a trip through France/England/Ireland for my family of 7. I am attempting to get from Caen, France to London the fastest/cheapest way possible. So far, I have found 2 possible routes:

  1. Going by train from Caen back to Paris...and then hop on the Eurostar highspeed to London OR
    1. Take the Ferry from Caen to Portsmouth....and then taking the train from Portsmouth to London.

if anyone has a better alternative, I would love to hear it!
thanks!

Realistically, you’re going to have to head back to Paris and take the Eurostar. If you have some flexibility in your itinerary and could end up in Paris, Lille, or Calais instead of Caen, it would be a lot cleaner.

Fastest and cheapest seldom go together -- pick one !! You first option is probably the fastest since the train from Portsmouth will be a non-high speed and a ferry crossing is always slow.

IMO, the ferry is a good choice if you travel overnight. You'll save the cost of a night in a hotel and have more daylight hours for sightseeing. Otherwise take a train to Paris and the Eurostar to London.

Mare,

I have to agree with the others. Take the train back to Paris and then the EuroStar to London. It will likely be more expensive than the other option (especially as you're buying EuroStar tickets for seven!), but by far the quickest and simplest method.

You'll arrive in Paris at Gare St. Lazare, so you'll need to take the Metro to Gare du Nord, which is the EuroStar terminal. It's a bit of a walk from the rail station at Gare St. Lazare to the Metro station (lots of Escalators as I recall) but not overly strenuous).

Happy travels!
