Could someone guide me on how get from Nice to Venice by train. We are looking to travel on Monday July 30th. Do we need to book tickets in advance or can we simply buy the tickets at the Nice station?
Thank you !
Sharon, this will be an 8.0hr-9.0hr journey by train with 2-3 train changes. With only a week to go, it's really too late to search for the great discounts for this run. You can buy the tickets you need at the Nice Ville train station. I suggest that you buy them when you arrive in Nice and not when you are ready to depart.
Thank you for the quick reply !
Your fastest route with the fewest connections is Nice Ville-Ventimiglia-Milano Centrale-Venezia Santa Lucia, departing at 07:55 and arriving at 15:40. It's possible that SNCF (French National Rail) won't sell you tickets for routes entirely outside of France (Ventimiglia-Milano and Milano-Venezia). Be sure to ask when you get to Nice. If that's true and you have to buy your ongoing tickets in Ventimiglia, you will have 15 minutes to do so if you leave Nice at 07:55. If you want more time to take care of business in Ventimiglia, leave Nice at 07:25.
Sharon, "It's possible that SNCF (French National Rail) won't sell you tickets for routes entirely outside of France" Based on my experience, Tim is absolutely correct on that point. I've found that Nice Ville ticket office will sell tickets to the first large station in Italy, but no further. For example, on a trip from Nice to Stresa, they provided tickets as far as Milano Centrale but I had to buy another ticket from there to Stresa. I used the Kiosk, which wasn't difficult. I also agree that it would be better to buy any tickets in Ventimiglia rather than Milan. It's a smaller station and not nearly as busy as the ticket office at Milano Centrale. Happy travels!
I suggest, Sharon, that you buy Ventimiglia - Venezia S. Lucia online as in right now, then buy tickets Nice - Ventimiglia on Nice.
I would suggest that you try to get reserved seats on the Nice-Milan portion. The train that I took was so crowded that I had to stand up is packed car from Nice to Monaco.
It no longer is possible to travel directly from Nice to Milano. It will be necessary to make a connection in Ventimiglia. There is open seating on the regional trains that run between Nice and Ventimiglia. No reservations are possible. Reservations are required on IC trains between Ventimiglia and Milano and on EuroStar Italia trains between Milano and Venezia. The reservations come with the tickets.
