We will be travelling from Nuremberg (prob airport as dropping of a rental car) to Berlin on a Saturday (in December). There will be 6 of us: 2 adults, a 14 year old, an 11 year old, a 5 year old, and a 2 year old. What is the best way to go: Dauer-Spezial(knowing I have to buy in September to get the 29 Euro rate), the Schönes Wochenende, or some combination of regional fares? If there isn't a HUGE difference in time (i.e. 12 hours vs 3), I am ok with taking regional trains over ICE.

Ok- Did more research. I think the Dauer-Spezial is probably the way to go. 116 euros to get us there in about 4 hours vs. the 35 euros to get us there in 8+ including multiple train changes.

I agree with Cate. That's about what I found. It's not 12 hours vs 3, but it is 8 hrs vs 4 hrs. So, is it worth spending an extra $120 and a committing to a specific train to save about 4 hours travel time?
