HELP! How do I get to Positano from Rome???

I would sure appreciate someone's help. I have been sitting on my computer for 14 hours and can't figure out how in the heck I'm going to get from Rome to Positano.

My flight arrives at 4:00pm on Tuesday, April 24 and it looks to me that these are my choices:

1.) Take the 5:45 train from Rome to Naples. (Will there be enough time to make this train??) Anyway, when I'm in Naples, take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, then a bus or taxi to the hostel. (Another question, how late does the train run from Naples down to Sorrento AND is bus service even going to be available at 11:00pm?)

OR

2.) Take Rome train to Pompei. and catch the Circumvesuviana there to Sorrento. The really bad part of this trip is that you can't even board the train in Rome till after 8:00pm!!

Can someone please help me?? Thank you SO much.

Kindly,
Donna

I think you would be best to stay over until morning in Rome. You don't have time between you flight arrival and the 5.45 train unless you are really lucky. The trip into Rome from the airport is 45 on it's own, plus maybe doing immigration, getting bags, buying your ticket to Naples and finding your train platform (Rome Termini Station is quite large). There are lots of places to stay near the station - kind of "iffy" part of town, but safe enough at that time of day - we actually stayed at the Elizabetta Convento (in Rick's book) a couple of blocks away.
I would suggest going to Naples and then taking the Circumvesuvia train to Sorrento. The bus stop is right across from the Sorrento station. The station that the Rome train takes to Pompeii is not on the same rail line as the Circumvesuvia, so that won't work. It is possible to go to Salerno from Naples and then go west to Positano, though I'm not sure quite how that works - seems to work better to go from Sorrento.

Oh my gosh, thank you BOTH SO much for taking the time to reply to my message. I can't tell you how relieved I am to have this info. At this point, I'm going to go ahead and stay in Rome the first night and take a morning train on down the next day.

I had wondered if I should consider staying in Rome as an option, but dismissed the idea because my entire trip is only 7 days and I wanted to make the most out of my time there, but this will work out very well anyway. I'll be rested and I can hopefully get down to Positano in time to meet everyone for lunch!...( "Everyone" = My son, his bride to be and the rest of the wedding party )

Thank you again, I am so very appreciative. Ciao!

Kindly,
Donna B.
