Heathrow Flight Connection--website error?

I'm a little confused and I think I found a mistake.

I'm flying from Reykjavic (KEF) to Shannon (SNN) with a change of planes at LHR. The arriving flight and departing flight are both from Terminal 2. When I checked Flight Connections at the Heathrow website, they gave the following instructions:

Security Screening (OK)
Biometric Capture (they now take your picture on departure)
Passport Control (UK Border)

Why am I going through Passport Control when I'm just changing planes? I have to go through Passport Control once I get to Ireland--I did a few weeks ago when I went from LHR to DUB--so why go through it in the UK.

Is this an error or something new?

It is correct.

You must go through UK immigration at Heathrow as you are entering there the Common Travel Area of the UK/Republic of Ireland. Your picture needs to be taken as flights from the UK to the Republic of Ireland are treated de facto as domestic flights. Alas you will need to go through immigration again in Shannon also as Ireland only recognises the CTA as applying to British and Irish citizens and configures its airports accordingly. If you were flying in the reverse direction there would be no immigration on arrival in Heathrow from Shannon.

I had a feeling that was the reason but I thought I might be able to bypass UK Immigration since I would have to go through Irish Immigration.

Interesting how the website says I only need 60 minutes for the transfer. Not if I have to go thorugh UK Immigration. :)

I have three hours--more than enough time for "paperwork" and a pint.

I haven't done this kind of transfer at T2, but looking at the order of events, it is quite possible that immigration may be done within an area dedicated to these transfers and not the main immigration. Left to you to find out though ...

I recent did a transfer at Heathrow from an international flight to a connecting flight to Shannon. Both flights were at Terminal 2. You do have to go through UK border control, but it was very fast (unusual for Heathrow) at there was a separate screening wing for transfers.

Thank you. I mentioned this passport control when changing planes at Heathrow in another post a while ago as we have gone through it regularly. I was essentially told I was wrong...by the 'experts'. So glad you clarified this for others! (Yes, I appear to be a little crabby today so I will close my computer now.)

Knew it worked that way in T5 but hadn't experienced a transfer in T2.

You can open your computer again now....
