We will be arriving at Heathrow after a long flight and plan to spend that night (and maybe two nights) near the Eurorail train station, hopefully in an interesting area, before leaving for Paris on the train. Question:how far is the Eurorail station from the airport (more or less). We would plan on taking a taxi from the airport to a neighborhood near the Eurorail station. Also, what is the name of the station itself? I understand it's best to get our train tickets on line. Thank you for all the help you give to many travelers!
The station is St Pancras International. Heathrow is some distance from Central London and St Pancras is Northeast of the heart of London. But distance is relative. Others or a guide book will be able to give you a better idea of the cost of a taxi vs the tube. However the least expensive method should be to take the Tube. I did this same thing last year. Here is what I did. I searched the internet for a Hotel near St. Pancras (The George is the one where I stayed ) and booked a room. It was within easy walking distance to the station (A few blocks) I rode the tube's Piccadilly Line direct to Russell Square from Heathrow. This hotel was several blocks from the tube station. This tube line starts at Heathrow so it is almost empty so it was easy to get a good seat with a place for your luggage. It picked up people all the way into central London and then started getting empty again as we headed out of central London. I bought an oyster card right by the tube station at Healthrow and used it to get to my hotel and do my sightseeing around London. I had bought my Eurostar ticket on linefrom home. I picked a time that would get me to Paris in the early afternoon and at a good price. So I arrived in time to join my Rick Steves Tour after a Metro ride to my Paris hotel. On my travel day to Paris I did not have to get up early, had a leisurely breakfast then took the short walk to St Pancras and caught my train.
There is a bit of a security check that requires you to be checked in at least an hour before departure (maybe 2 hours????)
The Picadilly line goes from Heathrow airport to the Kings Cross station. St. Pancras is next door. There's even an underground passageway between the two stations. For a hotel, we have stayed at the Premier Inn which is one block from the Kings Cross station. Two blocks the other way (just past St. Pancras) is the British Library. What a treat. Nice cafeteria also. Your not far from the British Museum either.
If you stay at a hotel near the Piccadilly Line you are just a few minuites by Tube from the heart of tourist London (Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Green Park) and could easily see westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace- in fact anywhere in London
For the sake of clarity, the train is the Eurostar, not Eurorail. The minimum check-in deadline is 30 minutes. If you want door-to-door service from Heathrow to your hotel, a private car service will be cheaper than a taxi. Many people recommend Just Airports. There is a discount for paying cash. The cash fare for a saloon (sedan) from Heathrow to anywhere in postal code NW1 is £34.
