HI! I am flying American airlines to europe on Friday. Has anyone flown American recently? Are they still doing meals/snacks, etc or do we need to pack out own? I know so many airlines are cutting down so I want to be prepared!
On the transatlantic portion you should get dinner and a breakfast. You will probably not get anything on a connecting flight. i.e. if you start in St. Louis and are connecting through Dallas or Chicago, you won't get anything on the first leg.
Obviously, this assumes you are flying coach.
I would suggest you call them up and confirm exactly what you will get on the flight.
On transatlantic flights they serve meals in coach, not great ones, mind you, but meals. You can order special meals, such as vegetarian, in advance, at least 4 hours in advance unless you have clout. They usually serve a light snack 1.5 to 2 hours prior to landing. Soft drinks are free, but beer, wine and cocktails are $5.
On your return from Europe, you'll appreciate the ice in your drinks! They will give you plenty.
Either way, I've always brought my own food then filled up my empty water bottle at a drinking fountain after I pass security. The meals the airlines serve might be "free", but if it's bad food, is free really worth it?
I just try be courteous to fellow passengers and don't bring anything with a strong odor. But, I do often get dirty looks when I take out my big sub sandwich while everyone else is eating their plastic chicken.
