Has anyone flown Alitalia (Nice to Rome) or within Europe?

I live in a very small town and only had one choice for a travel agent and unfortunately have already booked and paid for a flight from Nice to Rome in March, 2009. I wanted to save a day (otherwise I think it would have been a 10 hour train trip) and booked a flight the agent said I could carry on my Rick Steves' 21" Roll-Aboard bag. In researching Alitalia's website, it looks like I will have to check my bag as it exceeds the carry-on weight and dimension limits. I can't tell from their website if I will be charged anything extra for a bag in excess of 20 kgs. for a flight within Europe. Thanks for any replies.

Your 21" RS Roll-a-Board will weigh more than 20 kg? That's 44 pounds.....

You will be charged 12 Euro for every kg you are over the allotted 20 kilograms

We fly Alitalia often (which can sometimes lead to misery!)... and here are the registered CHECKED baggage allowances for Alitalia flights:

DOMESTIC
20 kg max

INTERNATIONAL/INTERCONTINENTAL

FIRST/MAGNIFICA CLASS: 30 kg max
ECONOMY CLASS: 20 kg max

If you're on a shuttle that does not have First/Magnifica Class, than all CHECKED luggage must be no more than 20 kg or you pay the surcharge. Sounds like that's what you're on.

As far as carry-on, Euro Airlines are very restrictive. On Alitalia, you are allowed to carry only 1 piece of hand luggage on board which must not exceed the following dimensions (including handles, side pockets and wheels): Weight: 5 kgs., length: 55 cm, height: 25 cm, depth: 35 cm

Based on what you're carrying, you will have to check your luggage. If you were flying out of Italy you might get away with it (and then get groused at by locals when you get on the plane), but coming out of France, I doubt it.

And Frank is correct, it is E12 per kilogram over -- and they will not allow any bags over 32 kgs. on the plane.

Our last flight with Alitalia ( a few weeks ago) was about 1/2 full (left out of FCO) and they were not too strict on the luggage requirements as the flight was so empty... but not something I'd plan on. Of course, if you've NOT flown an Italian Airline before (or a plane filled with Italian locals) DO NOT be surprised when everyone claps as the plane lands - just part of the culture!!!!

Frank, oops! Sorry, no, I was no freaked out last night that I was going to have to check my bag. My RS Roll-a-Board is not going to weigh over 20 kgs. I am going to pack light and it will not go over 22 pounds. I was trying to convert kgs to pounds and cm to inches and got all mixed up.

Unless your bag is under 5 kg (12 pounds) you'll still have to check it.

I will have my small backpack and the RS 21" Roll-Aboard so I am sure it will have to be checked. Has everyone had a good experience with Alitalia and no lost bags (I hope, I hope)?

Thanks for everyone's help.
