Rick is a little sketchy with the details on this. 8:50 am train starts in Nice, goes to Digne-les-Bains; then bus to Veynes; then 2-car train to Grenoble; then train to Annecy, arriving about 6:50 pm. Is there enough time between stops to get tickets? to find the right place to go? Should I reserve ahead of time? It sounds like a great trip but I'm a little worried about making all the connections. Thanks!
No, I haven't done this trip. However, I checked the SNCF (French National Rail) site and found Digne-Veynes-Grenoble-Annecy listed. According to the site, both the Dignes-Veynes and Veynes-Grenoble legs are on buses operated by SNCF. You could buy your tickets for Digne-Veynes-Grenoble-Annecy at the Nice Ville station.
Thanks, Tim. That eases my mind knowing I'll have the tickets ahead of time.
An alternative to save time: Easyjet flies from Nice to Geneva (55 minutes) and from there the short train ride down to Annecy.
Thanks, Tim. Good to know. The train-bus-train up to Annecy is supposed to be beautiful, over canyons and mountains, but it is a long trip and would take a whole day ... so the plane option is good to think about. Thank you.
Dorothy, did you end up trying this? Has anyone else tried it? I want to do it but it sounds a bit stressful...
I did Nice to Grenoble in 2009, but when I looked into doing it using the train to Digne, the bus and train did not connect. I wound up going via Marseilles instead, and it was a long day. The last leg was by bus, and when I got off in Grenoble I was very glad not to be going any further. You would buy the ticket for the whole thing in Nice. (Note that there are long lines for the ticket office in Nice, and you can't use the machines unless you have a chip-and-pin credit card.) The mountains around Grenoble are scenic, the town itself was disappointing.
