I am wondering whether I should take the train from the Harwich port to Liverpool station & then on to London Heathrow or whether to just go on an excursion from the ship and end up at Haehtrow airport. I am wondering if the price savings (without excursion) is worth it or not. We do not leave London until 7 pm. We will have been out to Windsor Catle when we arrived in London, so seeing it again for the extra fee or going by train direct to Heathrow is what I need to decide on.
Any opinion?
Madeline, if you book an 'Advance' tariff train ticket far enough in advance then you can travel from Harwich International to Liverpool Street station for as little as £8, with a journey time of around 1 hour 20 minutes. You have to change trains at Manningtree, but it's a very small station and very easy to do. That tariff restricts you to the specific train it is booked for. A more flexible ticket purchased on the day will cost £30. The cheapest route from Liverpool Street to Heathrow is on the Tube, Central Line to Holborn and then Piccadilly Line to Heathrow, which will cost £3 off-peak if you have an Oyster card, £5.50 if you haven't and will take around 1 hour 10 minutes. If you take off at 19.00 for a transatlantic flight you need to be at Heathrow by 16.00 to start checking in, so Liverpool Street by say 14.45, so it would be fine as as long as you don't leave Harwich International any later than the 13.33 departure and you have no delays, or the 12.33 departure to be comfortable. So, I make that a minimum cost of £11, maximum £35.50, but a fair bit of changing trains with luggage. There are other options of course.
Whatever you do, don't ask for a train to Liverpool or you'll end up in that city in northern England. The London station is always called "Liverpool Street".
