Hammersmith Underground connection??

We're flying into Heathrow and using the tube to get to our hotel. Looks like the best route is to take the Piccadilly line to Hammersmith, then the H&C to Paddington. Some of the maps make it look like you can transfer from Piccadilly to H&C at Hammersmith, on others it appears that you need to exit one station and make a short aboove-ground walk to the other. Anybody know??

You will have to make a short walk to reach the H&C line. Even though it will cost more consider taking the Heathrow Express or Direct directly to Paddington. If you're hauling bags around this might be the most stress-free option. If you must take the Tube take the Piccadilly to Earls Court and then transfer to District line to Paddington.

Much thanks for the advice. The Heathrow Express was my first choice, however we're landing in the mid-morning on a Friday and have about two and a half hours to kill before we can check in to our hotel and dump our bags, so I figured the time might be well spent acclimating the family to the tubes. We're packing very light. On the other hand, if our flight is late or the customs process at Heathrow is less eficient than I'm assuming, the Heathrow Express wil be far and away the best option.

When Michael typed "Direct" I think he meant "Connect" as in Heathrow Connect, a train service from Heathrow to Paddington that runs frequently, is almost as fast as the Heathrow Express, but costs only £6.90. See www.heathrowconnect.com.

Most hotels will allow you to drop off your bags early on the day you arrive even if it will be several hours before you can officially check in.

Just go to the hotel directly. If they have empty rooms available they will let you check-in early. If not, they will hold your bags until the room is ready. In 15+ trips to Europe, only one time have I not been able to check-in early.
