What is the best way to get from Hallstatt to Linz? Can it be done without going back to Salzburg? Thank you for your help!!

Yes.
The train from Hallstatt goes to Attnang-Puchheim, which is on the main line from Salzburg to Linz.

There are also non-stop trains from Hallstatt to Linz.
And if you're driving, it takes less than 2 hours - and you don't have to backtrack through Salzburg.
