Hallstatt, Austria (Train Question)

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to organize my schedule for Europe and wanted to go to Hallstatt, Austria this summer. I'll be leaving from Salzburg. However, when I go to RailEurope.com, I can't enter Hallstatt as a destination.

Do you know how to enter Hallstatt as a destination on the website? Does it have a different, European name? I'd really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

I just figured it out...Bad Goisern.

Please let me know if that isn't right.

Thanks!

Any trip between Salzburg and Hallstatt (or nearby Bad Goisern) is going to involve a bus-train combination. Since you can go right to Hallstatt, you might as well do that. You can go to the Austrian national rail system at http://www.oebb.at/en to check schedules and prices, and order tickets. You will probably find their prices quite a bit less than RailEurope's.

All train travel: You will need to take the train from Salzburg northeast (toward Linz and then Vienna). Halfway up the route, in the center of Upper Austria, you then will have to get off in Attnang Puchheim. Then you transfer to the Salzkammergutbahn which goes to Bad Ischl and terminates on the eastern shore of Hallstadt Lake. From there you take the ferry across to Hallstadt.

The train ride is quite special, because it is a historic route.

Alternative is to take a bus to either Bad Ischl or right to Hallstadt. Check www.oebb.at
