Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to get from San Diego to LAX airport and back. Traveling to China 10/27/2010 - returning 11/10/2010. 4 adults and 4 suitcases. I'm finding that one way car rentals are outrageous!! any help would be appreciated.
What about using long term parking at the airport? It won't be cheap, but it might be cheaper than the car rental. I am not familiar with the area, but what about Super Shuttle or some other airport transportation service? I recently left a car at Denver airport for 42 almost a month. It was cheaper than airport shuttle from my vacation spot. (Family emergency involved)
Amtrak has several trains from San Diego to Union Station in Los Angeles, as which point you can take a bus to LAX. This is probably one of your cheaper options.
I vote for Amtrak - And don't forget they use their own sense of time (as in, always late) - take an earlier train than you might think is necessary...I got $62 R/T.........in fact, the earliest train out of San Diego is something like 6a-9a, then you still need to get to the airport...this might not work, unless you're willing to spend the night near the airport...[EDIT] I got roughly $84 pp EACH WAY for Super Shuttle - I used a zip code of 92101.
Eileen...not knocking your Super Shuttle suggestion, but the last time I took SS home from LAX, they ran me all over town dropping people off before they finally got to me...2 and a half hours after they picked me up. I'm a half hour drive from LAX. Just a little tip on their business practice...I vote for AMTRAK
I did some checking. Amtrak will run you about $125 for 4 to downtown Los Angeles. Then you have to take the Union Station Fly Away bus to LAX which is another $28 for four. ....... You can rent a car at SAN and drop it off at LAX for about $135 plus gas. (Check with Kayak.com)....I'd think it's easier to get a car. BTW, I found cars at that price big enough for four people and 4 suitcases.....
Thank you all for your rapid responses and the great suggestions. I'm going to look into the train.....
There is a great private car service that is really inexpensive and can keep it that way because he has no employees. The name of the company is J&N Transportation 877-227-2785 and they do rides to LAX for $160.00 plus gratuity. They provide chilled water, soda and movie for the ride and newspaper if the pick up is not to early.
If you drive your own car from San Diego to LAX you can park in Long term Parking or "park and fly" parking for approx $14 per day (ish); about $200 for your 14 days. Thats cheaper (and more convenient) than any of the other ways suggested. park N fly (which we use for short trips) has coupons and discounts if you reserve ahead (web). (park n Fly is a private company, more expensive than long term lots, but more convenient. Long term must be cheaper). Only drawback is you have to drive back to San Diego after a long flight from China. Whats the cost of flying San Diego to LAX return. Convenience may be worth it
