My sister and I will be island hopping Crete to Santorini to Mykinos to Athens. Should we pre-purchase ferry tickets online or wait till day of travel to purchase on site. Will arrive in Crete August 27th. Which ferries are best?

I prefer purchasing my departure when I arrive on an island. Typically, I do not worry about availability, but there is a chance that if you are taking a ferry right away, the weekend of Aug. 29 and 30, that you may have issues. That is the weekend when nearly every tourist on an island is trying to get to Athens, maybe Crete, to fly home. The Monday after will probably not be an issue, but that weekend...maybe. As for ferries, the company really makes no difference, just the type of boat. If a ferry gets you there on the schedule you want, then thats the one. Slow ferries are stable and cheap. The fastest hydrofoils are expensive, possibly a little rough, and the big cats are a good compromise between the two. Choose by schedule and your budget.
