Greece: Small Fast Ferry vs. Large Slow Ferry from Piraeus to Santorini

We will be visiting Greece in the fall. I'm considering taking a ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini (Thira) on Thursday, 16 October. I have found very little about the pros and cons of the 2 major options, so I hope someone can help me with that. I put the question here because there doesn't seem to be a lot of action on the Greece forum and it is a transportation question.

The fast Sea Jet 2 takes about 5 hours and stops at Sifnos, Milos and Folegandros along the way. The comments I have seen so far on other online sources say that this ferry often runs as much as 1.5 hours late and is very rough going if the water is at all sketchy, even to the point of making many passengers seasick. There is no way to get outside to get some fresh air. It is also more expensive, although not as pricey as flying.

The slow(er) Blue Star Naxos takes about 7.5 hours, and stops in Paros, Naxos and Ios before arriving in Thira. Some people recommend taking it at the time we are going because of its size and stability. It is cheaper, although I suppose we could increase the cost by the class/seats we choose. Going out on the deck is a possibility with this ferry.

Practical question: How bad are these ferries in marginal weather?

Aesthetic question: Which route provides the best scenery along the way?

All experiences, tips and opinions are warmly welcomed.

Lo I would fly.

I took a long slow ferry from Piraeus to Mykonos years ago.. many years.. and I have never forgot how unpleasant the long long boat ride was .. there is no scenery out on the ocean.

If you choose to take the ferry buy the best seat you can.. we did not.. and BRING your own food and snacks.

I would look up airfares.. cheap and fast.. ( cheap if booked well in advance and you are going almost off season)

Thanks, Pat. I have been watching the airfares go up and down for a long time now, and that is also an option for me, but they haven't seemed very cheap.

However, today, the Aegean one way flight at 16:15 Athens to Santorini for 2 people on 16 October is 141,28€ for two of us for a flex fare which includes checking our bags as is required and paying with my Visa. The last time I checked, the flex fare was 175,28€, so today may be the day to buy and forget about the ferry. Also today, the cheap GoLight fare is 121,28€ including the extra charge for checking our bags. The Sea Jet 2 fare for both of us is 123,00€ and the lowest Blue Star Naxos fare for us is 75,00€.

Thanks for the reminder. I was just about to give up on flying.

Blue Star is the nicest, newest of the large ferry companies, or at least it was a few years ago. If the schedule is not a problem, then the big ferry is the more comfortable, reliable ferry, although all ferry schedules should be taken with a grain of salt. Fast ferries often have issues with wind, and the one I took was pretty bumpy to start with; we were happy to get off. Scenery is only relevant as you approach the islands. (Bored Greek residents tend to shut the curtains against the sun and don't even look.) Flying is bound to be faster, affordable, and more on-time.
