Google Streetview goes inside London railway stations...

Did you know that the Google Streetview cameras have been inside a number of UK railway stations, including St. Pancras International? Here's the Eurostar check-in entrance, for example.

Most of the main London terminals are covered, plus Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester. Gatwick Airport is also featured, but not Heathrow as yet. There is an interactive map showing all of these new locations, from which you can see it's not just the UK - a lot of large Italian railway stations have been covered as well, amongst other places.

Anyway, I just thought this might be useful for people who like to do really detailed route planning.

Those crazy, uninhibited Europeans ;-)

Did you notice how Google's software blurred the face on the fountain LOL?!? Better safe than sorry...

Thanks, Kevin. The more I can 'see' my vacation, doctor office visit (they're always in those awful maze-like medical complexes), first trip to that new Ikea, etc., the more I like it. So many times I've really benefited from having already 'seen' the front door of my European (or American) hotel, or the entrance to the tube station, or the (reassuring!) corner just before arriving at that train-station-in-the-scary-part-of-town. It's especially nice when in that travel-induced mental fog that settles in from time to time...

"first trip to that new Ikea, etc"

I find the best way to find my way out of Ikea is to leave a trail of little meatballs. Otherwise I'm lost for hours.

Eileen, I'm with you on that. It's a great tool for the virtual tourist too.

Karen, I see from the Ikea website that they sell meatballs in their stores over here too. You can buy 20 of them for £5.80, which at, say, one meatball every 5 metres wouldn't get you any further than the section that's supposed to look like a market where you can buy stuff to put in the back of your kitchen cupboard and never use. Could get pretty expensive if you want to go as far as sofas and lighting...

I was reading just today that now Google has a facility where you can create your own "Streetview" type images and share them on line.

Kevin, the first time I went to an Ikea, my daughter took us on a "shortcut" and I swear I was in the old warehouse in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Funny video. The guys behind it were the brothers who are responsible (or to be blamed for) the song/video "What Does The Fox Say?"

"Bangin' kitchen" LOL!

I LOVE those teeny, tiny Ikea houses! I have to go through them nearly.every.time.I'm.there. Just such a different way to live from what I'm used to. Maybe I'll build a shed in the backyard...I can FaceTime my husband from there ;-) Is that so wrong?

I'm so sorry, Karen - I'm responsible for your getting lost because I'VE been eating those meatballs! Yuvs 'em! Not haute cuisine, but I gots to get my meatballs and taters. I didn't get any on my last trip (sniffle). I DID buy two things that weighed approx. 73,485 pounds and Just.Barely.Fit. (as usual) in the ol' Honda Civic (whew!)!
