Good place to stay over from Munich to Venice

My wife and I will be spending a week in Germany then a week in Italy. Our last stop in Germany will be Munich while our first major stop in Italy will be Venice. The 8 hour train ride is a little too long for just one night in Venice so where would a good mid-way destination be where we could stay overnight? It would need to be accesible to rail/bus. I am thinking maybe Castelrotto?

Franco,

You might consider Verona. It's a beautiful city and a lot of the trains that use the Kufstein-Brennero corridor (Munich to Italy) stop there anyway. Depending on which train you choose, you would probably end up changing trains there anyway.

There is one train departing from Munich Hbf at 11:30, arriving Venezia S.L. at 18:10 (travel time 6H:40M, no changes, compulsory reservations). That's actually quite a reasonable travel time for that route.

Happy travels!

Castelrotto won't work for you, you'd have to take a bus from the nearest train station to the town, doesn't sound like a good idea given your paramaters. Verona is a good choice, as suggested by Ken. HOwever, if you wanted the first leg to be shorter in duration than that, Bolzano is a possible overnight stop. Go here http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en to see what the problem is with Castelrotto, and to see schedules for Munich to Verona or Munich to Bolzano.

It's a little longer ride, but we routed through Salzburg (2-4hr depending on train you catch), and had a very nice 1 night stay. Wasn't very pricey, and all on one ticket.

I flew Air Dolomiti from Munich to Venice on their direct flight ~ 1 hour. Maybe you could consider that option?

I would go with Verona. Much more interesting than Innsbruck. A stop in Hall in Tyrol is worthwhile but might not be practical if you are training.

The trip from Verona to Venice will be convenient the next morning.

If you are there at the right time of year, plan an Opera at the Roman Ampitheater.
