Going TO CDG from Paris; RER Ticket good for Metro on 1st leg?

I've read plenty about going INTO Paris from CDG on the RER B and that the RER ticket is still valid going directly into the Métro; however, my plans involve only traveling TO CDG from Paris. If I buy the Zone 5 RER ticket up front from a Métro station, will it get me into the Metro and then the RER to the Airport-- it should, right? As long as I stay within-system and have paid for Zone 5? (I'd rather not have to pay an extra Metro fare if it's already included anyway.) Thanks!

Roissy opened in 1974. The RER extension got out there in the early 80s.

John, what was the main reason-- to make free transfers to the Métro? Or to get to CDG efficiently? (I thought it was to have a good commuter rail system for the suburbs.) Here in NYC, and in most other US cities I've lived in, there is no free crossover between rail systems (NYC Subway and Metro-North, for example).

Paul. I think that was the main reason the RER was installed
